This holiday season (and beyond!), when you find yourself with a few minutes, craving a read that’s both substantive and digestible, head to the website of the British magazine The Gentlewoman and tuck into one of the thoughtfully penned profiles of modern women making their mark on today’s world.

While a few are household names (hello, Beyonce), the subjects are chosen for their impact. Their renown and purpose run the gamut: Novelist Jennifer Egan, chef Leila McAlister, activist Fatima Bhutto, and designer Isabel Marant offer a sampling of the names you’ll find in the collection. All are inspirational in their own right, and it’s a treat to spend a bit of time immersed in their stories.

And while the online profiles make great anytime reading material, if you’re in need of a last-minute gift for the modern thinking woman on your list (perhaps that’s you!), a subscription to the print edition of The Gentlewoman might be just the thing. In the publication’s own words:

The Gentlewoman celebrates modern women of style and purpose. Its fabulous biannual magazine offers a fresh and intelligent perspective on fashion that’s focused on personal style – the way women actually look, think and dress. Featuring ambitious journalism and photography of the highest quality, it showcases inspirational women through its distinctive combination of glamour, personality and warmth.”

The editors at Gwyneth Paltrow’s digital journal goop include The Gentlewoman on their list of independent publications that “are becoming true collector’s items.”

It’s easy to see why.
