Why Evan Rachel Wood is our newest hero

Evan Rachel Wood calling for an end to movies’ censorship of women’s sexuality

We were moved by her performance in The Wrestler and impressed by her ability to withstand criticism of her past romantic choices. But that’s not why Evan Rachel Wood is the newest addition to the “women we love” category.

Wood gets our vote for a series of tweets she posted after the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) refused to give her new movie Charlie Countryman an R rating until the director cut a scene showing Shia LaBeouf’s character performing oral sex on Wood’s character.

Here are some highlights of what Wood had to say (see the full transcript in this Mother Jones article):

“After seeing the new cut of Charlie Countryman, I would like to share my disappointment with the MPAA, who thought it was necessary to censor a woman’s sexuality once again. The scene where the two main characters make ‘love’ was altered because someone felt that seeing a man give a woman oral sex made people ‘uncomfortable’… This is a symptom of a society that wants to shame women and put them down for enjoying sex… It’s time for people to grow up. Accept that women are sexual beings… We are allowed and entitled to enjoy ourselves. It’s time we put our foot down…”

We admire and appreciate Evan Rachel Wood for using her passion, eloquence, and stature to stand up for women’s sexuality and fight for the right of all women to embrace that sexuality without shame.

That’s our fight too, and we have no intention of retreating. Crave was founded on the belief that women have every right to enjoy sex and experience pleasure, and two years later, we’re more committed to that belief than ever.

Consider our foot down. (And don’t expect to see it lifted any time soon.)
